Watch the video here to see the matcha latte recipe in action. Read on below to learn about adaptogens and for the written recipe.

What are adaptogens?

Adaptogens, aptly named, help the body to adapt. They balance hormones, including reduction of cortisol when stressed. They boost the immune system, decrease fatigue, help lower blood sugar and inflammation, reduce blood pressure, lower anxiety levels, and even help boost energy levels during exercise. They help your body to achieve homeostasis, or a state of balance in the body.

Adaptogens come from certain plants and herbs, and can have a pretty powerful effect. This means that it’s important not to overdo them – as in, don’t consume all of them in a day! Also, if you’re on any medications, it’s important to check with your doctor and make sure that they won’t interfere with medications. For example – since it can lower blood sugar and even blood pressure, you’ll want to make sure they’re safe when also on medication for these conditions.

Where can I find them?

Plants that are adaptogenic:
– Ashwagandha
– Ginseng
– Goji Berries
– Tulsi, also known as Holy Basil
– Turmeric

My favorites of these are ashwagandha, tulsi, and turmeric. I found ashwagandha in powdered form, like I used in the matcha recipe below, and I find it simple to use this way. It can also easily be blended into smoothies. I also really like this Organic India Tulsi Ashwagandha tea (linked to Amazon):

I regularly use turmeric in my cooking. It doesn’t take much, just a dash. If you add black pepper, it helps the body to absorb the turmeric and enhances its benefits. I like to use it in tofu scrambles, and also include it in my regular matcha lattes along with ginger, minus the ashwagandha.

I will add that consuming adaptogens in food form is more beneficial than taking supplements. Supplements are typically synthetic, which means they are absorbed less by the body and can have questionable origins.

Pumpkin Pie Spice Ashwagandha Matcha Latte

1/2 tsp Matcha Powder
1/2 tsp Ashwagandha Powder
2-3 dashes Cinnamon
1-2 dashes Ground Ginger
1 dash Nutmeg
Maple Syrup to preferred sweetness

  1. Heat milk either in microwave or on the stove
  2. Add all powders and maple syrup
  3. Blend using a frother to ensure matcha dissolves as much as possible

I found my ashwaganda powder at TJ Maxx, but here is an organic powder from Amazon:

Turmeric can be purchased in the spice isle at any grocery store.

I hope you give it a try!
