It was another slow reading month for me – I finished watching Young Sheldon, then switched back over to finish Gilmore Girls (for the umpteenth time!). Now that I’m finished with that, I’m back into reading. I was on vacation from work last week and read two books that week, picking up two more after that.

I’m 1/4 through one of those books, plus halfway through a digital book and 1/4 through an audio book. Suffice it to say that I will have many more to share with you by the end of July!

Without further adieu – here is what I read last month.

The House Is On Fire, by Rachel Beanland
This is an historical fiction about the theater fire in Richmond, VA in 1811. It uses real people, and as many real stories as possible. There were stories of enslaved people that had to be largely made up due to lack of records on them. The book was good and worth the read!

Sunflower Sisters, by Martha Hall Kelly
Another historical fiction, this one was rooted in the civil war era. As with the last book, this one told stories from the perspectives of multiple people and covered the stories of enslaved people. It was another well-done historical fiction with female protagonists and I enjoyed it even more than The House Is On Fire.

The Dorito Effect, by Mark Schatzker
This one was a break from novels to learn more about nutrition and the food industry. This book largely covered food addiction and the development of chemical food additives to use artificial flavor to hook people on nutritionally-deficient food-like products.

Another Life, by Kristin Hannah
As per usual, Hannah knocked it out of the park with this one! It was my top read of the month, and left me emotional and yearning to dive into another good book. This book is not an historical fiction, but a family tale of marriage, divorce, infertility, adoption, and personal growth and change. It was a wonderful story, and one I’d love to see adapted to television.
